First published in 1893, this collection of documents of primary value in Protestant history was out of print from 1925 until 1960, when it was reissued by The Pilgrim Press with a new introduction by Douglas Horton, former Dean of Harvard Divinity School and former minister of the General Council of the Congregational Christian Churches.

Williston Walker, in preparing the compilation, selected those creeds and platforms he felt would best illustrate the history and the abiding emphases in the faith and practice of the Congregational churches. To each document is appended the author's careful description, placing each in its historic setting. No alterations have been made in the original book, since it's a classic whose value is only enhanced by time.
