What's a LISTEN UP! Bible Study, and why is it unique?
God's word is alive. God will always have something new to say to us. That's why the purpose of the LISTEN UP! Bible Study series is not simply learning information about the Bible. It is hearing God speak. There is a difference. In these Bible studies, you will be encouraged to listen: listen to the Bible, listen to your own questions and responses, and listen to the honest sharing among participants in your study group. Trusting in the power of the Holy Spirit, we believe that in that mix of biblical text, personal engagement, and honest speaking and listening, God's word may be heard, speaking words of challenge and words of comfort.

Luke: Part 1 and Part 2 Listen UP! Bible Study
The Introduction begins with the wonderful quote from John Robinson, “There is yet more truth and light to break forth from God’s Holy Word.” Luke would agree! What’s more, when the Introduction states that “Hearing God speak is a gift of the Holy Spirit,” then Luke is definitely on board. Luke includes the Holy Spirit more than any other Gospel.

Here is a story that begins with an elderly couple (beyond child-bearing years) then quickly moves to an adolescent girl (not ready, at least by her own testimony, for child-bearing). Here is a Baptizer named John who, more so than in the other Gospels, encounters and engages people from a wide variety of social groups. Here is Jesus who, more so than in the other Gospels, breaks social boundaries, embraces the outcasts and the unexpected, questions the status quo, and defines his ministry simply and graphically: “to let the oppressed go free.”

Luke stresses issues of social and political significance—the plight of the poor and of women, the prejudices among social, economic, and ethnic groups, and the power structures evident in, with, and under social etiquette and social mores. In both structure and content, Luke sounds the call to liberation louder than any of the other Gospels. And that call includes the call for others, including us, to get in on the action.
